Potential 2013 Daytona Issues

I realize there were recalls on the turn signal stalks and the coolant hose, but there may be another potential issue to look out for. Some may have already experienced it.

When starting cold some times there is a noise which sounds like plastic gears grinding and only lasts for a slit second. I would closely relate the sound to skipping Lego gears, or almost like a New Years spinney noise maker. I have only 200 miles on the bike and have had no other issues. The dealer said just ride it until the first service since it is intermittent, but will provide updates if anything comes of it.

Mine did this at the track last weekend before tech inspection!!!!

I've already got 4,500 miles on her, but it scared the shit out of me...It was only for the initial fire-up in the morning to ride the bike through tech. The rest of the day she ran like an absolute champ.

I'm glad to hear somebody else has heard this sound too. And your sound description is spot-on

Glad I'm not the only one! I was a mechanic for 3 years and have lots of engine building experience, and honestly I don't have a clue what could make that sound and there be no issue. If it were cam gears or something the timing would have jumped and been way off. The radiator fans kicking on sounds like a computer booting up so who knows on this bike.

I just had this as well. The shop took the left fairing off and tightened some of the hoses around the coolant system. Refilled the reservoir, though it never emptied or overheated. Haven't had a chance to see if it resolves the problem.

The original service advisory was completed prior to the bike being picked up originally, so while it might be related, I can't be sure.

I think mine might have a slight coolant leak somewhere too (although its had its first service and if it does, should have been rectified). When I am on / have been on the bike, I get a funny burning kind of smell... Can anyone comment on what burning coolant smells like?
I have been having this as well on most rides, again I can't be sure it's related, but check for flecks of white spray up your left side.

Could also be an ABS self check at start up....a couple bikes I have had with ABS do this and it sounds just as you described.....my touring bike sometimes does it at at a stop with the front brake applied......a moments clicking and the brake lever drops about 5mm....weird but normal...

I get that burning smell also. The only thing I was able to find was , chain lube sling on the big exhaust box.

Glad its not only me then! Its not a bad firey kind of smell, more of a sweet kind of slight burning smell...

At first, I figured it was just the engine bedding in and going through heat cycles, but I am into 1100km's now and I still get it... Ill have a dig around and see if I can find anything, although I did suspect it might have been a slight coolant leak onto a hot engine / exhaust.

If you guys find anything, please post up!

White deposits on the left side are caused by the coolant... tightened up the hoses around there a bit and they're gone.
Burning smell probably caused by chain lube on exhaust box.
I haven't been getting the rattly noise, maybe because it never really gets cold enough here for the oil to thicken up.
Am getting poor idle though, supposedly caused by poor quality fuel? But it doesn't happen all the time.
EXUP valve got stuck once, 20 mins at the dealer and done.

Coolant leak and oil leaking from the right side engine cover, tightening up the bolts seems to have fixed it.

I've bought a lot of new bikes in the past this is the first I've had a bike leaking fluids, kind of disappointing, even Harleys don't leak like this anymore.

How concerned about the chain tensioner should I be? The dealer said to finish the first 500 miles and come in then. Should I be more concerned? I had a 1998 CBR F3 which had a crappy cam chain tensioner that made noise all of the time, but it wasn't really a necessary fix.

if the bike has very low miles, I seen a post that said only a few hundred miles. it very well could be cozmolene left over from shipping. the bunring smell also could be some of the heat shielding fibres melting.

Well I have some issues right now on the 2013 675R version that I already described in the maintenance section. I try to describe them shortly:
1) Change gear light can't be set higher than 10000 revs/min even after the first service and having ridden 1800 miles
It looks like on some bikes you can fully adjust it out of the box and on others you can't... "Mystery"
2) The clutch on my bike needs to be released a extermely long distance until the bike starts to roll off (out of the box / nothing was changed)
3) There was already a recall of triumph because of replacing and readjusting the cables on the exhaust system
4) The engine seems to have a low performance on mine but maybe it's just my personal feeling (675R three cylinder compared to a honda cbr 600rr four cylinder)

1 sounds like maybe a bug, I would take it into the dealer.
2 Just adjust the cabling to your liking, but your clutch should be catching close to the end
3 no clue
4 Highly doubt it I am a huge Honda guy have owned cbr6 and 1k, it is not the 3 vs 4 you feel, the 675 actually has more torque, and torque is what you feel the most when taking off.

I would take your bike into the dealer, it is a new bike no reason in voiding warranty if you have no clue what you are doing. I would imagine if the exhaust valve is not working properly that would be why you feel a decrease in power.

The only issues i had experienced was a coolant leak from one of the hoses, but i tightened it up myself when i noticed it. Make sure you remove any dry coolant because you will continue getting the burnt coolant smell if it's touching hot engine parts. Gave mine a good rinse and all smells are gone.

WD40 works great at removing chain grease from the muffler cover.

Exhaust cabling was replaced during first service (now you see why i advocate getting the dealer to do the first couple of services...just in case)

Having an issue with the microswitch under my front brake lever. Doesn't always disengage when i release the brake, which means the light stays on. Getting another switch replaced under warranty.

Aside from that, she is superb!

4)There must be something wrong with your bike because I noticed the increase in power immediately over a 600, that IS what makes the Daytona so fun, smooth power curve and more of it. That or it's your perception with the 600s high reving narrow power band (more work and noise) that you must be going faster, as you said "feeling".

The nice thing about the Daytona is that you don't have to ride it like a "normal" inline-4 600 (i.e. stratospheric RPM's). There's power almost throughout the rev range, not just after 10,000rpm ;)

Pillion Seat Not Latching?

Anyone have trouble with the pillion seat not latching? I lost mine on a ride. I back tracked and found it. Minor scratches but I ordered a seat cowl now. Was going to do it anyway.

I can't get to pillion to latch on.

You have to give it a really hard push and hear the "click" when it goes in. I almost lost my cowl that way too, had to actually remove one of the rubber pieces to make it fit. So much for oem quality... Lol. I assume you've removed your pillion pegs too?

If you lift the battery up it makes it easier. Once you have that up and out of the way, follow the pegs to under and inside the undertray. There are two bolts that are attached to the inside of the subframe. Unscrew them and they come right off. Return batt back to the tray and enjoy. Again, getting the battery strap back on was the hardest thing of all of this!!!

So today...I found out in deed my 2013 675R was leaking a ton of coolant. The a small leak was from the top left radiator hose, and also there was a major leak at the center hose behind the exhaust manifold.

I took the hoses off, inspected all of them to make sure there was no holes in them and cleaned it up. Also drained all the coolant and put in distilled water + Redline Water Wetter. I can already see the bike runs cooler by 1 temp bar!

All the hoses needed about a 1-2 turns to tighten them.

I've noticed the clutch catches really high too(practically with lever released all the way) really sucked on the first incline I came too. I have adjustable levers on my mine and its stool the same(dealer installed though) I was thinking it was because the bike has clutch assist or something. I've been clutching with two fingers lately, seems to take up the difference. I'm also getting a squeek from what I believe is the brakes when coming to a stop. Told the dealer today, they said they cleaned the pads and rotors :/ 2 blocks from the dealer it did it again. Never really seems to go away

That's the one thing I don't like about this bike so far. Also, I can't believe that for the price they don't include simple adjustable clutch levers. Fortunately, I don't need the clutch that much anymore because I've been having a blast with the quickshifter. Not sure how I lived without them.

The tranny on my other bike is going to be fucked because I'm going to develop this bad habit and upshift without pulling in the clutch all the time.

When assembled by British hands, then yeah.

Also, while you're at it, buy a torque wrench (of the in-lb variety) and make sure all the frame and motor bolts are secured to spec. When I first got my bike, the clutch cover was leaking oil and it turns out that like half of the bolts were barely more than hand tight.
