hey everyone! so i have about 1700 miles on my '13r (i know, i really didn't ride much this year
out
, and i've had continuous oil 'weeping' incredibly slowly out of both the clutch cover and the lower sump. last weekend, since it was supposed to rain all day, i threw it up on the stand and decided to go through and check all the bolts, hoping some of them were not torque'd properly and this would eliminate my problem. some general observations...
1. first off, nearly 80%+ of my bolts on both my clutch cover, and particularly my sump, needed a significant amount of tightening. with regards to the sump, i was unable to tighten the back bolts (above the exhaust)... is this something i should be overly concerned with? i don't have a definitive answer as to whether or not the other bolts eliminated the weeping, and i'd rather not remove the exhaust if it's not necessary.
2. when tightening the cover on the left hand side (for some reason which cover it is eludes me atm), i noticed a great deal of black, tarry gunk behind it (on roughly the 3 o'clock of the cover). there is quite a bit of it in between the cover and the other parts of the engine. at first maybe i thought it was wire insulation burning, as there was quite a bit stuck on one of the cables, but it pulled off quite easily and there was insulation underneath it, indicating to me at least that that was not the purpose or cause of it being there. when i looked above the spot, it appeared one of the 'gaskets' was melting, almost as if they had used some type of thick liquid sealant in lieu of a gasket. i will try and snap some pictures when i get home, as this is absolutely baffling me. but... does anyone have any ideas?
3. the fact that the majority of my bolts were loose made me feel not-so-very-good about my baby, so i started to go through a bunch of other bolts to assure they were nice and tight. i checked all the covers attached to the crankcase, the triple trees, handlebar bolts, and engine mounts. they were all within 95% of their original torque, so that was a bit relieving. any other bolts you guys can recommend checking?
i'm sure i will modify this post to make a little more sense when i get a moment, but i wanted to get it out there just in case any of you have any 'aha's!' ideas for me to consider.
thanks as always! :cool2:
