Hi guys, My striple has randomly stalled on traffic lights at idle (Neutral or 1st gear and clutch in). I have left the bike off the battery tender and it always starts when cold or hot, no problem. So I don’t think it is the R/R. Battery holds voltage. I plugged the dealer tool and no faults recorded. The only thing I can recall doing prior to this happening was buying a new battery tender which is a lot more powerful, which, like I said, I have not plugged into the bike since stalling started.

I have a remus aftermarket slip on and got the dealer to reflash the ECU for the arrows map over a year a go.

Any suggestions I could check prior to going to the dealer?

Thanks in advance!

Low hanging fruit first -- check battery connections and main ground. On an older bike, I'd suspect the coil but the stick coils on each plug these days don't go bad. It is just possible that the battery has an internal crack that opens up when it gets warm.

Thanks Chrip. I’ll remove the battery to check. I cant think of why the battery never looses power and the bike starts up immediately after it turns off.

I’ll get back with findings if any.

Hi Chirp, i checked the battery. I cant find anything wrong with it. It has held power after a week of sitting in the garage without battery tender and there doesn’t seem to have any cracks nor spills around the area.

Bike has over 6000 miles, and I have not changed/cleaned spark plugs. Maybe it is due.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Modern spark plugs running on unleaded fuel don't need cleaning. As to the battery -- if there is an internal crack that opens up when warm there is no way to diagnose it other than replacing the battery. Still, if it always starts right back up that probably isn't the issue. I have heard that the TPS can cause issues like this but it's not a problem I've seen personally.

I’m thinking it might be a lean air/fuel mix. I turned the bike on and ran it for several minutes. Idle seemed slightly jumpy after it warmed up until it turn off. I didn’t set a timer (shame in me). Once it died, I turned it back on (starts with no issues) and RPM were more “stable” at around 1250”, after a few minutes I had to turn it off since I had some family commitments.

Any suggestions as to how to simple test my suspicion?

Thanks in advance!

Does it run well at high rpm? If not, I'd be thinking fuel filter/pump. I would also consider draining and flushing the the tank. A bit of debris could cause this albeit unlikely.

I have not seen/noticed any fueling issues at high RPMs. I commute with the bike to work 2 or 3 days a week and the bike sat only for a week. So gasoline is not “old”. I have a video of the RPM going under 1200s at idle, but I cant uploaded here. I’ll try to load it on you tube and paste the link. This “blip” in RPM happened a minute or so prior to the engine dying at idle in my garage.

Fuel can, rarely, come contaminated from the pump. Still, if it runs well at high rpm, it's unlikely that. I'm betting on electrics/electronics. Just for fun, let it idle and move the wire bundle that runs out of the ignition barrel around. I have seen bad connections between the barrel and the main wiring harness that cause intermittent failures.

Met a Ducati/kawasaki/bmw mechanic. His suggestion is to check fueling issues. He rode his bike behind me and listen the idle rpm and witness the shut off it a traffic light. Possible solutions: 1-map reflash at dealership, 2-boosterplug, 3-powercomander. I’ll be thinking which way to go.

I had a similar issue but only when the radiator fan was running and the idle would struggle. Turned out to be the RR was going bad. Still charging, but loading the stator too much.
Also the throttle bodies needed some cleaning. That's all.
