Radiator Fan not working...

Nice weather today, 14C and sunny. Took out the bike to go to university to get some studying done for exams, but that takes me into the city, which means lights and waiting. The bike got up to 9 bars while sitting at lights, and then I turned the bike off as to not damage anything. This was accompanied by some bad chemical smell. I don't think the fan turns on at all! I'm pretty sure that it used to work, it was quite obvious sounding, but now absolutely nothing...

Also, possibly related, do the HID ballasts have some safety shutoff in case of too much heat? I've had the high beams not work about 5 times in the last 2 months, but today the low beam running lights stopped too (worked later that day, but high beams still nothing). Whenever I have this issue the lights always work the next day without issue.

Are there any fuses for the fan? Maybe some cable came disconnected, where should I be looking? 2010 Daytona with 5000km on it.

Check your fuses, especially the one for the radiator fan. They are found underneath the left side cockpit infill panel. They're fuses, they blow and then things like the fan stop spinning. That's worth checking first.

As to the HIDs: The fact that they turn on, then off when starting, then on again every time you start the bike is very bad for the metal salts in the bulb. This can cause them to sediment out and it becomes progressively harder to ignite the plasma when you are starting them. The fact that they work intermittently leads me to believe this is the case. With your high beams, do you frequently turn them on and off or use them as a passing light?

Ya, over here on the island it is possible to ride for the whole year minus maybe a week of snow/slush. Only issue is during the winter months it rains a lot, but I still commute. I don't think I know a Lee, but there a ton of KTMs and SuMo's on the island.

Checked the fuses with a multimeter and they're all fine. Managed to get my fingers in and the fan spins fine, nothing is blocking it.

And both of the HIDs work perfectly today after the night's rest...and I don't flash them at cars. They usually have the chance to warm up completely before I turn them off.

It's still under warranty, so why not take it to a dealer and let them look at it. Worried about them saying the HID headlights are the culprit?

There are other things to check. Getting to the motor itself and seeing if it is still good. Check for continuity from the power wires. No continuity, bad winding in the motor.

The temperature relay to turn the fan on could be bad.

Could be a bad wire in the harness that is the problem.

Electrical gremlins take time and patience. Good luck.

hmmm, I will probably end up doing that, just got to get through exam period first :(

and ya, I'm not a fan of the dealership so much...I discovered the kickstand bolt was loose to the point of it almost falling off, maybe it just backed off from vibrations, maybe new plastics == good business?

my 06 is doing the same thing after installing hids.. i would check your charging system. i know my stator is going out. so its running mostly on the battery(i have to charge it everynight). i duno theres a safely relay or sumthing that switches the fan off when theres not eought power?..

Anyone still here? Fan not working

hello all

just came across this thread trying to solve another Daytona mystery....

My bike began boiling over a ~month ago. I flushed system and replaced thermostat. Still no good. Noticed fan was no longer running- it was obvious when it did.

Checked fuses= good. Fan rotates freely=good. Applied power to fan and spun=good.

I read it had a relay but cannot find one on bike or in diagram. Does anyone have a picture, diagram or good explanation where relay is if there is one?

also, anyone else have this issue and any fixes?

Very VERY frustrating as we are in prime riding season and I can't ride!

It's a 2011 Daytona ~7k miles.

any and all help is appreciated!

Do the bars on the display go up as appropriate? Maybe the coolant temperature sensor is kaput.

Thanks Sass, but yeah the bars work including red light warning and flashing of the bars when it over heated- got off highway after a run up and that happened. Pulled off and it all boiled out...the mystery was born.

Any thoughts on a relay or were sensors for fan are located?

Much appreciated

Get TuneECU. Perform fan test. If you don't have TuneECU and aren't going to do it then go to a shop and have them perform a fan test. If the fan doesn't run when the test is performed hook a voltmeter to the fan connector and check voltage when doing the fan test. If it has power the fan is probably burned out. If it doesn't have power then well that's a bit of diagnostic fun.

Thanks MacB- I already put power to the fan as listed in the original post and fan spun up no issues.

I think you are right in now needing to go into the ECU...but it is killing me to think of spending more money on a tuneboy or worse, taking to the 'darkside' of a dealer service bay...

Safe rides my friend :sifone:
