This happened to me three weeks ago, at the car wash.
I had my GSXR track bike on the rear stand so I could wash it and clean/grease the chain. I was using a long handled (15") grill brush and WD-40 with the bike in 1st gear idling. No big deal.
When I was done I hit it with the low pressure water and let it spin to air dry. Right before I was about to lube it up, I noticed some excess grease/wd on the swingarm. Well stupid old me had a towel in my hand from drying off the bike and decided to wrap it around my hand and sneak it in to wipe off the dirt. Well, the end of the towel got caught up in the chain and pulled my hand into the rear sprocket.
The result was the amputation of the last 1" of my right thumb

I'm healing well and can't friggin wait to get these stitches out so I can ride!!

is this fucking real? Seriously who puts their bike in gear to lube the chain?

This needs to go on the GSXR forums.
:biggrinjester: you always make me laugh.
Side note that sucks bro heal up well and I guess you learned your lesson now ;)

HMmmmm, well after thinking about this for more than a second, how can you have the bike in 1st gear idling and still get your hand caught in the damn sprocket......? So you were riding the clutch with you left hand and reached all the way to the ass end of the bike with your right hand to then get it jacked by the sprocket? Im sorry man, gonna call either BULLSHIT or DUMBASSERY on this.....

It's actually really easy to just have it in first and let the rear spin on a stand. No drag from pavement to kill the engine at low rpm's I have however seen people's bikes come off the stand doing this while Erving the engine and seen it go through the inside of the garage.

He wasn't riding the bike, the bike was on the paddock stand.

When he was cleaning it he had the bike in first gear with no clutch so the rear wheel is spinning at idle rpm.

He has gone into clean a bit of grease of the chain with his rag. The rag had gotten caught in the sprocket pulling his thumb through...

YUM!!!

no riding at all. Just a lazy man's way to clean the chain.

Heal up.

That's rubbing it in at least your still a mostly whole man. Althoe it might be a little harder to play x-box now.

Yes because the amount of effort it takes to spin a wheel is just so tiresome that I could not imagine how tired his arm would have been from doing that hard hard task.

Look when stupidity shines, someone has to shit on it. That person is me, dude while I hope you heal and all that fancy shit, this is one of the dumbest things I have seen a human with a Triumph do.

Darwin comes to mind.

Thank you everyone! I dont mind being the darwin kid for the moment, and believe me, no one knows how stupid this was more than me! Ive been cleaning my bikes under power forever but i have never stuck my hand near the chain before! I WILL ALWAYS leave the bike off now while cleaning it.

Just search this forum for "How not to lube your chain"

You will find you were not the first, and probably very lucky to only lose the tip of your thumb.

That poor sap "Nubs" as he is now known is on the Gixxah forums...
If you manage to get through several pages of his post, there are even more recounts of others who have done the same some with pictures as well. Even happened to a unfortunate girl on that forum... So, sad.

Maybe the mods should sticky "How not to clean your chain" at the top of the maint. and repair section.

Heal quickly.

Kindest Regards,
Erik

there is another thread on the kawi, gsxr, cbr forums, i forget which where the guy loses most of his fingers from doing the same thing. Obviously the OP is a dumb shit but we have all done dumb things especially while riding. At least he is man enough to post it. I sure wouldnt lol!

A not particularly dumb, but very n00b friend of mine had the same thing happpen with his 125 XTX, which stalled and only cut the very tip of his finger.

He had a towel in hand, and it looks like the stupid survival reflex is to grab onto it when it gets yanked, giving such results, so don't ever believe you're above that.

The fact I have a beard and long hair totally prevents me from event attempting such sit, have fun if you do

I still cringe when I recount the story. When you first told me I had shivers up my spine seeing as I had just cleaned and lubed my chain at the same time for the same race, although the bike was off

I showed all my buddies at work the pics you sent. You gonna make it out to HPR on the 25th?

Yeah I'm trying to get there, it all depends on when i get these stitches out. I go to the surgen tomorrow and will know when that is after the appointment. I feel like it isn't going to happen though...:verysad:

I will definitely be at PPIR for round 8 on Sept. 15th!
