Possible piston slap?

660 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  DangerDerek
Yesterday while riding to university my Daytona started making this awful sound, I have an APE CCT and I've tightened it before but never had this sound, I even thought it could've been timing but I timed the engine and the noise is still there (nothing in the valve train either) , thought it could've been bearings but the oil is clean and upon further inspection seems to be OK, I thought it could be piston slap but I'm not sure, I don't want to tear down the engine completely so I'm making a post asking if anyone's got any insight into this.

Update:
After tearing apart the head.

I think I may have found the problem, the exhaust header gaskets were glued with silicon and as far as I can tell are not the original part.
I'll be ordering a new set and posting an update once I've got it all back together.

The exhaust header seems to be OK, I don't know why anyone would use silicon instead of buying the original part and replacing it.

Check your cam chain tensioner guide blades. That doesn't sound like a header problem.

It looked ok when I looked at it, but I'll check again.
This is another video I took on the side of the road the day of.

Update:
Checked the camshaft tensioner nylon blade, and it looks like it has a good bit of wear in it, I wonder if that's enough to be causing the noise I have, other than the wear it fits pretty good, not missing any clips or anything, the aluminum piece is in good shape and so is the pad, so I might keep those and replace only the nylon blade, also the APE CCT no longer ships to Chile, so I'm thinking about getting the OEM hydraulic tensioner as a peace of mind, again, any insight into this is very welcome.

Hello folks, bit of a small update, changed the chain blades, tensioner, cam chain, and basically the whole distribution side, no changes, I'm scared thinking I might have a problem with the camshaft ladder, and I say I am scared because I might not be able to fix it, the workshop manual says you'd have to replace the entire head, I was diagnosed recently and that definitely is something I can't afford, is there anything else I can do? I'll be checking the cam journals this weekend with plastigage, and hopefully there's nothing wrong and my problem lies somewhere else, but please if someone is able to offer any help or insight into this problem or possible solution into this it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Derek
Hello I have yet to find the cause of this noise, but I did find my valve shim clearances are out of spec by quite a bit, doubt this is the problem but I'll fix it during this week and I'll post an update (Pic attached).

Edit: We did notice that the problem comes from the head specifically where the camshafts are, so maybe this could be the problem, will update, thanks.

Cheers,
Derek.

Hello everyone,
Small update
I decided to open the engine, and found a cracked cylinder wall, which is weird because the compression was the same on all 3 cylinders, anyways, I also found that the bearings were shot so I'm changing that as well, I'll post an update when I've got it up and running, this also answers the issue I had with cooling where it would always pressurize, anyways, that's about it for now, cracked cylinder wall attached (There's also signs that valves were changed at one point by the previous owner so at least I don't have to change that, other cylinders are OK, maybe they snapped the chain at one point, idk)

Cheers,
Derek
