Hi all

Background:
2014 Daytona 675, 8500km on the clock, never dropped, never tracked, never raced, maybe taken twice over 10000rpm (I bought it new when I was a starting biker, only used it on public roads).
Always serviced, always garaged.
Last service at Triumph official dealer: May 2018, almost a year ago. That was, according to the bill, small service, with oil/filter change, check brakes, wheel bearings, head bearings, synchronize injection, tighten and oil the chain, check battery and lights, test-ride the bike.
Service done at 8441km, now 8513km on the clock, so I rode the bike home (through the city) and maybe a little spin on the road.
Since then the battery was removed and the bike was standing in the garage untouched.

Two days ago I visit the bike, I want to sell it. What do I see - a small oil puddle under it, on the left side!

I check where it comes from, and I see loads of old oil everywhere on the engine, running from the top down!

Now, in my opinion, the service did not do a proper job. Maybe they did not tighten the filter properly, or did not tighten the bolts?
It must have happened after the service, first of all because I am very meticulous with my bikes and I would have noticed such a leak and grime everywhere.
Secondly, the service guys did not inform me of any leak when they gave me the bike back.
Third, it could not have happened from just standing as the old dried oil goes back towards swingarm.

I am calling these guys tomorrow and demanding repairs free-of-charge. This is outrage!

OR, do you think something could have happened in the 60km after the service?
What could be leaking?
See photos, green arrows is where I see oil, and it just comes all the way down the engine and backwards towards the swingarm.

Cheers, guys!

I'm not sure it's an oil leak. First thing I would do is lift the tank and check the fuel line connections. It looks to me like fuel has leaked, run down and picked a little dirt for the stain above the countershaft sprocket and chain lube form the chain/sprocket. It would be worth pulling the sprocket cover and cleaning that area. Just be careful replacing it as it's easy to miss route the coolant hose so that it rubs against the chain.

The other possibility is that you over filled the tank before putting it away and just enough fuel came out the overflow or vent tubes (IIRC one of them routes straight down).

Gentlemen, thank you all for your comments.

I am not sure it is fuel. My reasons:
First of all, there was a little puddle on the ground, it did not smell like fuel.
Secondly, there is a LOT of grime in there everywhere, running down the left side. That is from 60km on asphalted clean Swiss roads.
I am starting to think the head gasket is letting oil though, do you think this is possible in this location? (I looked in from the front, front of the engine is dry).

I just can't imagine that in 8500km of beginner use, always properly warmed up, never revved out, the engine would give up the ghost like that.
To me it feels like service guys royally fraked up something.

You are correct, I checked engine schematics, it is nowhere near oil filter, this leak is from the top somewhere.

Oh, chain grease, ok. Maybe. But would it spread like that all over?`
I mean, the leak starts somewhere above the green arrow on the first photo (the one where you see red fairing).
I can't imagine chain throwing lube so far up the engine!
I mean, I do oil the chains of my other bikes myself, never seen any grime collecting on the engine like that.

The only time I saw grime like that is on my former GSXR1000 K5, when the bottom of the engine started sweating oil a little bit.

That is grease thrown by the chain in the front sprocket area. Not oil. If you remove your front sprocket cover you’ll see a ton of the stuff.
As for the puddle, had the same issue with my 14 D675R at around the same mileage you specify and then at around every other service.
Oil pan screws are the culprit every time. They come loose and most come already loose from the factory. Remove your fairings and take a look below the engine. Get a torque wrench and tighten to spec and shell be fine.
You have a nearly brand new bike. All of your gaskets are not nearly old enough to leak unless they’ve been removed or loosened somehow.

Also
Ride your bike like she ought to be ridden.
Peace

I need to bring the bike to service. 20km through the city.

Do you guys think it is save to ride it? I do not want it to go up in flames...
Check your oil level and top off as necessary before you leave.
As long as it's not actively pissing oil you should be safe.
Make frequent stops and check for drips.
Good luck
Make sure you mention the sump screws when u hand over the bike for service. First thing that needs to be checked after oil filter of course.

Oh, goody, NOW I am scared.

OK, I will check oil, and there is "check oil" light in case of emergency.
Hopefully all goes well.
I will mentions sump screws, thank you for stressing that point!

as per your list on the service they didn't touch the head. when is the last time you had a valve check?

and above the green arrow of first pic is pretty vague but ill go +4 on coolant , its all around that general area.
Why would I need an valve check on an 8500km hardly stressed engine? According to service manual the first valve check would be at 20000km.
I did not hear anything out of the ordinary when I rode the bike last (I have very sensitive hearing, so to speak, and I take meticulous care of my machinery).
This is Triumph, I doubt it will have tight valves every 4000km, it is not an Aprilia after all. :)

I need to visit Beirut once. My gf really wants to.
I hear it is a real party city, because everyone lives like it is the last day, as noone knows what can happen tomorrow, it is Lebanon after all.
Am I a dumbass for saying this or is this true? (You can be honest, I can take personal critique.)

We have a very beautiful country that got ****ed up bcs of many hungry politicians that made life here more difficult because their "theft" budget ruined our economy.
Apart from that, we have beautiful beaches, beautiful mountains, beautiful weather, beautiful women. Yes Beirut is a living party place, and there are many other cities higher up the mountains that are now pretty similar.

Living like there's no tomorrow? It's not like that. You're not a dumbass but These sayings came about because (some of) the partying went on during some of our most serious crises. It was More like the people felt helpless and rightly went about their lives like nothing had changed.

You should come during the spring or summer and you will love it for sure.
Lots and lots of bikers here too.

Hit me up when / if you do.

OK, got the Daytona back.
Apparently there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, just the mechanics put too much lube on the chain and it got thrown off all over the engine. :|
That is why normally I tell the service guys not to oil my chains with their sticky ugly stuff, I do the oiling myself with transparent good stuff... but I forgot to tell them with the Daytona.

Anyway, got the bike back...
After over a year out of the saddle of that bike I totally forgot how to ride it. :afraid:
Every time I go in the corner I feel I am losing the front, feels like it will slide to the outside, and I am barely leaning (fresh Conti Sport Attack 1 on it, not the original Supercorsa SP V2).
So I was riding like I was first time on a bike ever, I was scared.

Probably if I ride it and get used to it again I will get better...but I have 3 other (sports)bikes and they are all less scary = easier to ride.
I love the Daytona but I am not sure if I should hold on to it any longer. :|
