Hello all,

During my part out I noticed there are actually a lot of JIS phillips hardware on the bike. If you do not know what JIS screws are, have a look at these links:

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-tools/jis-screwdrivers/

http://www.instructables.com/id/When-a-Phillips-is-not-a-Phillips/?ALLSTEPS

SO, how to determine if it's regular phillips or JIS? If it's JIS, you will see a dimple on the head:

After reading it, you should buy yourself a set of these screwdrivers, because I found these screws in the following places on the bike. This could save you a lot of heartache and fist punching because you rounded off the head.

Alternatively, you could try and replace the screws/bolts with JIS heads with allen or more traditional ones. If you do, it's ideal you use a JIS screwdriver on a JIS bolt/screw to get it off properly--or risk rounding it off.

Granted, you sometimes get lucky removing JIS screws/bolts with a regular phillips screwdriver, but the most common place I have seen rounded off heads is if you are doing the 1050 throttle tube upgrade.

So without further ado, here are places I found JIS screws:

-Throttle tube housing
-clutch perch retaining clip
-control switches (both sides)
-Gauge cluster
-Throttle bodies

I will update as much as I can as I run into them.

Happying DIY'ing.

Great info, thanks. I got lucky with my throttle housing. I had read that people stripped it a lot, so I applied lots of forward pressure with a "normal" Phillips screwdriver. Just looked at it, it has dimples, so I'd have bought a JIS set if I knew about this. All Phillips suck, though. Hex is good, but my BMW is held together with Torx, and it's even nicer to work on. Never had a fastener slip on that thing.

So... I just remembered that a tool set I bought came with "extra" Phillips heads. Turns out, they're JIS. I would check through the collection of removable screwdriver heads that we all have, you might already have JIS.

The pics in the article weren't that obvious, the sides of the ridges on the Phillips (first pic) are tapered in toward the point, while the JIS (2nd pic) are parallel along their length.

Hate to take the jam out of your doughnut MadMel but that's a pozi-drive in the 2nd pic

At least Triumph don't try to invent their own fasteners

Haha, right you are, Baba. Now I wonder if Pozi fits the JIS screws better than standard Phillips.
It might but considering the old saying "right tool for the right job," I'll stick with the saying. Plus I got myself a set of JIS screwdrivers off Amazon. My only complaint is they dont have the hex nub at the base so you can use an open end wrench to get more torque out of it and doesn't have a big grip. But for the screws I have seen they should work fine.
