Hi
I am going to Nurburgring soon and would like to know what the laws are for bike fairing. Do you need to have headlights and turn signals on the street, or can you use race fairings that dont have these?
Thanks
Max

Hallo
Ich werde bald Nürburgring und möchte wissen, was die Gesetze sind für Bike Verkleidung. Müssen Sie haben Scheinwerfer und Blinker auf der Straße, oder können Sie Rennen Finnen, die diese nicht haben?
Vielen Dank

Hi Max

http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/ringrules.html

It seems like the vehicle must follow the regular standard for street useage. So I guess race fairings is out of questions at these regular open driving days:730:

Good luck anyway with Your trip! Is the bike running fine now?

Hi Roffe

Yeah, I has found that but don't know what German law is (other than being more relaxed about speed). In England you can in theory run without indicators for example and perhaps without headlight in the day. If this type of ruling applies in Germany we could be good! Bike is still running with P1070 error... I haven't had the time to do full electronics test yet... Thanks for asking tho!

Hi MA:) According to my friends thats been down to the ring, a bike must always drive with headlight on and have more than 1.6 mm of thread left. And there are actally speed limits to remember in most places. The police is kind of curious about the noice from the bike also. I would recommend You to bring Your OEM muffler for the trip...

Let us hope that the germans may give You a more complete picture:158:

Edit: Maybe EarthBM could help You out (PM) as I believe he is situated in Germany for the moment...

hi,
the nurburgring is a normal road.
you have to have the things on your bike for normal road use .
max 95dB from your exhaust. (put your stock muffler on)
if the police stops you with a aftermarket muffler that has no E-type on it
than your driving is over!!!
and you need to have normal bike insurance because you are on a public road

i don't know which route you are taking to germany?
in holland you need the have the lights on your bike
aftermarket exhaust is no problem ( i have the Two Brothers :014:)
only a problem when you go to the big events like the TT in assen

check out this site: http://nurburgring.org.uk/index.html and the safetyvideo: http://nurburgring.org.uk/safetyvideo/index.html

If they stop you on the road with a non standard exhaust, they won't let you ride your bike any further without the original can on it...
This is what I heard.
indeed, the polizei do check exhausts and decibels so make sure you put your dbkiller in there and if it's an aftermarket exhaust, that it has an E number.
If and when checked, cheat and keep the revs as low as you can.

The ring is a public road so all vehicles on there need to be in order for public road riding (last I heard anyway).

And keep to the speedlimits while passing through villages on your way over there, 50 = 50. Once outside the townborders they're more lenient with speedlimits but inside towns they're very strict. The German police likes to play with speedguns and will jump out of the bushes to stop you and make you pay your fine with the nifty little creditcard machine they use nowadays.

that sounds funny :p

On public roads you need indicators, headlights, taillight, mirrors.
I dunno how they handle race fairings as I own a Striple. But i imagine its also forbidden.
As already mentioned your tires should be in good shape (>1.6mm "profile" [thread?]).

Its so true here. You can be on the autobahn with a recommended speed of 130kph...RECOMMENDED. So basically go as fast as you want in the no speed zones but if youre doing over 130kph and wreck, your insurance wont cover you. Be careful though. You'll be in a no speed zone area and then all of a sudden out of nowhere comes a posted 130kph zone with a cop and a radar gun 200 feet past it waiting for speeders. When you see the white circle with 3 black diagonal lines= no speed limit; red and white circle with a number, dont go faster than the number.

I'm planning a trip to the ring too in August so I've been doing a bit of research. Consider it a no speed limit road NOT a track and all that intails. They do check noise levels regularly so if you sound a bit loud aproaching the barriers you may get pulled over for a static test. They also have a few sensors around the track that you might set off if your too loud. German police have the power to CONFISCATE noisy cans if you get pulled on the way there. Race fairings are likely a big no-no too.
In the UK, you can only ride without lights if you have the appropriate DAYTIME MOT so just switching panels on you normal MOT is illegal. Most police here don't even know about daytime MOT's though, so will assume the bike is illegal anyway.

There is a new law in Germany which has stopped the police form confiscating loud exhausts.
It is still a little unclear as it is a european union law (has to be good for something) I will see if I can find out somemore.
