SPOILER ALERT Mid-Ohio
SPOILER ALERT...
Proceed no further if you don't want to know what happened.
OK, now for the rest of you.
I was at Mid-Ohio today and witnessed the Supersport race.
It was an impressive performance by Dustin Dominguez. P2 qualifier James Rispoli got a better start and led the first few laps. Dominguez was in second but was a couple of seconds back after two laps. But Dominguez put in the kind of panic-free, error-free performance you'd expect from a more experienced rider.
He gradually reeled in Rispoli, and in the process he turned a race lap that was faster than his qualifying time. When he saw the opportunity, he passed for the lead. Then he gradually and steadily built up a lead and Rispoli realized he needed to settle for second and not do anything crazy trying to catch Dominguez, as third place was pretty far back. There was a lot of smart riding for a Supersport class race.
The only "moment" for Dominguez came two laps from the end when he was trying to get past a cluster of four lappers in the Esses section (if you know Mid-Ohio, you know that's not a passing area). Going around the outside of the group, he was off the usual racing line and the bike very nearly high-sided him, but he held on.
Fine ride. Congrats to Dustin and Team Latus Motors.
