I've been past the requirements for participating in the classified sections for quite a while now but I still can't post or reply.

Can someone please let me know if this can be straightened out?

Thanks in advance...

I see the issue. You are required to have 25 posts before posting in the classifieds (and registered for 30 days). This is why you cannot reply or start threads in there.

Once you hit the threshold, you will gain the permissions automatically.

That's actually a darned good idea. Seems like a reasonable way to keep people from joining just to scam members!

Love the site. Hate the restrictions.

I love this site so don't take this wrong. The restrictions for classifieds are too strict in my opinion. I've seen explanations so no need to go over them again.

+1, not enough activity on here to hit 25 posts in a month, and if you try and post in the currently active topics or start new threads your posts get deleted. It took me 6 months to get 25 posts that didn't get deleted. Couldn't even post in other peoples for sale threads to buy stuff.

I like the security that our classified rules provide, but the strictness is causing an undesirable side effect - new members are posting garbage or reviving really old threads just to get their post count up, and that's not good for the forum. I don't want to see pictures of your cat, just sell whatever you have to sell and go away if you don't want to contribute anything valuable.

Maybe we can lower the required post count. I don't trust a 25-post member any more than a 5-post member. All they should really need is an intro thread.

That sounds like a good idea.

I notice new people when the "new threads" list is longer than normal and it's one guy with all the recent replies.

some may argue that this isn't ebay. I get what you mean, 25 posts requirement + registration probation period might seem like much, but it's also to prevent real spam from going everywhere too. We could lower the number, but that won't change people's habits.

We do want people to contribute in discussions.

I don’t understand why they don’t just put there stuff on eBay. If you’re new then most of us aren’t buying from you anyways so eBay is a better bet. Personally I think the classifieds should be completely invisible until the member has reached the limit and there should be a thing during sign up that says our site doesn’t have classifies. Tired of new people listing junk on here and trying to screw people.

I actually think that's the best idea I've heard! That way the sellers who are just here to quickly sell things will not be interested in this site, clogging it with needless replies to old threads, and leave without any knowledge of the classified section.

For those members that are trying to meet the required posts count. Try to start a thread that hasn't been started! I know, seems impossible! Do a review on an item that hasn't been reviewed before! I'm sure there's been something you've done to the bike that someone hasn't provided a how-to for. I like the current rules as they stand but if we could mask the classified section, I think that would eliminate a lot of the members who are here to just sell things! Like Mac said...just go to eBay!

I'm new here so I haven't been traumatized by the "scammers" like some of the long time members apparently have. Consider that the newer members would like to purchase something for sale. They can't even do that the way it currently is. If I were selling something, I would appreciate the extra pool of potential buyers. Another thing, if changes were made to allow fewer posts before listing something, you don't have to buy or even look at the item for sale. If you are worried about being scammed by a new member, just ignore them in classifieds.
All that said I've reached my 25 posts so it's a moot point for me now. I still feel like the restrictions are excessive though. Otherwise, love the site!

Maybe have a time limit associated with new registrations and not just post count. I know on some forums I do a lot of lurking (actually using the search function and all that) and not a lot of posting. That way a long time lurker isn't penalized for clogging up the forum with drivel. A month seems like a good starting point.

Selling items on forums, especially higher priced items, is much more attractive as a seller since ebay's fees are out of control. They were 10% last I checked. That's not chump change on a $500 suit or exhaust.

Good point Beatle. I thought of that after I had already given up.
Thanks, Smitty

I use Ebay quite a bit, and the issue with selling is that the buyer's PayPal funds go into "escrow" (unless you have a huge commercial-type of account). Selling something for $500, shipping it out right away, but having to wait 2-4 weeks for the buyer's funds to clear into your PayPal account is sort of stressful, and sucks. Buyer can jack with you if they don't care about their Ebay score.

I think the 25 post count is more than fair (as long as the 25 post's are more than total BS posts), as far as being able to sell an item. However, I don't think it should be a problem for a new member to be able to purchase something right away. What we have now is working OK - this forum has so far remained fairly tight all around, let's keep it that way. :smile2:

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
