Hey guys, ever since I owned my first 675 I have wanted to take a long road trip on it. the only long trip I took was from Phoenix, AZ to Northern CA. Now I would like to plan and get peoples opinions on a trip from CA to NY. Anyone done a trek that far? If so, pointers?

Great timing. I'm toying with the idea of LA to VA this spring or fall as well. On a STR. I've done it thrice in a car but would love some feedback, too.

Are you riding a Daytona or a Street Triple? A Daytona won't be comfortable for that far of a ride without modification like a gel seat, riser bars, a cruise/throttle lock of some sort (or your right arm will be killing you) and maybe some adjustable rearsets to move your feet forward some.

The biggest things I learned on a long trip besides what I mentioned above...prepare to make horrible time. You'll only get 130-140 miles max before you better be heading to a gas station. That means stopping about every 2 hours. You're also gonna want to stretch your legs when you stop so stops will be longer than expected. Bring a tire repair kit. Make sure your bike is in good repair including tires, chain/sprockets, oil, etc. My other favorite thing for the long ride was a tank bag that holds a camelback. Being able to take a drink of water while riding was awesome. And lastly, if you're on a daytona (probably even a street triple too?) be prepared for your ass to be on fire. The undertail exhaust makes the seat get really hot, especially in hot temps.

Otherwise, have fun!

+1 on what TRMN8TR said, don't forget chain lube. The longest day I've done on my Tona is a 15 hour day, logging about 700 miles. With the normal fuel stops and a few pit stops for food. All that was done with stock rearsets and seat, but my ass, back and knees started to hurt mid-day. Since then, I've got AP rearsets, custom seat and a throttle lock, which has made a big difference in my comfort. Not sure what sleeping arrangements you have in mind, but a hotel every night might get expensive and camping gear can take up valuable space and not to mention all the crazy weather in the Midwest at certain times of the year. I don't see any value in a coast to coast trip going in a straight line, but do whatever floats your boat. If you can find someone to go with, it might help with your sanity and focus, plus an extra set of hands might come in handy with a roadside repair. If it were me, I would rather go up and down the Cascade Mountain range, plenty of twistys. I'm taking 11 days off at the end of April and I'm currently planning a trip 'round Oregon, Cali and maybe Idaho, with another forum member. I wish you luck and if you do set sail on said trip, I would like to hear about it. ….my 0.02

I have to agree with your time possibly spent elsewhere. I've done a Colorado to Illinois ride and can assure you that things get pretty boring in the Midwest. I ran through Kansas which was nicer than expected, but if I were you, I'd run into the Rockies and enjoy some of the best riding in the country.

I did 8 hour rides on my trip and I was spent, both physically and mentally. That's just me though.

As was said, the Midwest is boring. There is a reason why they call them flyover states.

I would suggest doing a roadtrip up and down the PCH or around the Rockies if you want to do a trip.

Comfort is a personal thing. Some people don't ride more than an hour on their bike. I'll regularly do 400 mile day trips. In fact, I'm taking a 2-3 week trip to Alaska next year.

As far as extra luggage goes, It's not really a problem. You're just giving up passenger space. Doesn't affect your personal space. This was my bike at Crater Lake last year.

Fuel range doesn't really matter. I find after about 2 hours I want to get off and stretch a bit anyway. That coincides with about 120 miles or so, which is perfect.

I did the entire Michigan Lakeshore last summer in 2 days (even into Canada in the UP) for a total of well over 1000 miles on my Daytona in 2 days. My saving grace: Saddlemen Gel seat, GoCruise Throttle Lock, and BlueTooth earbuds hooked to my Cell docked on bars w/GPS and tunes. It was all on 2 lane roads with 45-55 mph speeds. Fun, but I was glad to get off the bike after day 2. If the ride is curvy and enjoyable, life is good. Straight lines will make you nuts on a Daytona.

I also did 1600 miles in just under 3 days (Michigan to the Dragon, to Nashville, and back), but that was in 95 to 108 degree weather 2 summers ago. Ugh! MISERABLE on a Daytona. Fried rear! Nice ride, though!

the farthest I have gone is twentynine palms CA to tuscon AZ witch is about 8 to 9 hours if you obey the speed limits(witch I did) with stops about every 1.5 to 2 hours to stretch and drink, and I wasn't a happy camper. Granted it was through the desert in the summer without a gel seat, bar risers or a camel back(I was not prepared for longer trips). Even with the necessary road trip accommodations, especially cross country I don't know if that's the Daytona's forte. S triple perhaps a different story.
I am stationed in Twentynine palms witch is in the middle of nowhere and often make 4+ hour trips to get anywhere worth mentioning. Just my opinion, but if your heart is set on it go for it!!! A bad day of ridding is better than a good day of just about anything else.
