BMW also has VANOS, which is variable cam timing for the purpose of linear power delivery across the powerband. Made famous by the E46 M3's S54 inline 6 cylinder. Common issues with the design include the faulting of the exhaust camshaft hub and VANOS Oil Pump engagement, solenoid bank, and a few others. Exhaust hub failure can very often be catastrophic and require replacement of the entire VANOS unit, though it is common these issues can be avoided with an updated oil pump disk and exhaust cam hub. That said, there is nothing on earth like banging that 340 hp 3.2L on the door of 9k RPM and the whole time it's pulling like a mother****ing dump truck.
