Front wheel bearing circlip...whats the point?

2011 Daytona 675R

Does anybody know what the point of the front wheel bearing circlip is? Every bike I've dealt with has the wheel assembly in tension between the fork lowers via the wheel spacers, inner bearing races and the long spacer between the bearings inside the wheel hub. Given that: I have no idea why the circlip is there. Just insanely curious. :)

I realize on the Daytona that the right-hand fork lower "floats" relative to the axle; the right-hand fork lower isn't part of the stack-up which is in tension. This shouldn't have any bearing (pun intended) on my question though.
