What You’d Better Know Before Buying a New Helmet – All About Helmet Shell Materials

Today, we would like to talk about things that make motorcycle helmets safe. In this article, we will discuss different types of materials that are usually used to form a motorcycle helmet outer shell. Since almost all inner impact-absorbing layers in modern helmets are made of crushable Styrofoam that absorbs most of the impact energy, we will focus our attention on hard outer shells.

Modern helmets use hard shells that could be divided into two main groups: those made of more affordable thermoplastics and those made with the use of composite materials. Plastic-based shells may use ABS, Polycarbonate, and Lexan or advanced mixes of these materials. Composite helmets are made using the bland of some fibers and resins.
