Coolant in Oil, More Damage Prevention Question

Hey guys. I’m new to Triumphs and now new to this forum. I did a search and didn’t find anything straight off. I’m picking up an 09 Daytona with coolant in the oil. I have been told by the PO that it is likely just a blown head gasket. I’m not counting on that, but I am assuming that is the best(cheapest) outcome. I won’t be tearing it down for at least a month, but I’d like to pull the old oil/coolant out of it today so that I can give it the best chance to not eat away the motor with the coolant in the oil. What is your suggestion to achieve the best possible outcome? I was planning to drain the oil/coolant and fill it with fresh oil in the motor and coolant/water in the radiator. I don’t plan on starting it to flush the fluid around because I think that may cause damage. I just want to put oil in the bottom end and remove the coolant. Does anyone have an opinion on what oil to put in? I don’t think it needs $10 a quart Lucas just to sit and not run. Thanks in advance.

Quite possibly could be the heat exchanger, too. Which is the round aluminum can on the lower front of the engine.

He says he already bought a billet oil cooler and swapped it out to the same result.

Blown headgasket... Why did it fail? IMHO a headgasket failing is a symptom, everything else has to be thoroughly checked, head might be warped, deck might be warped, etc. Are you ready to do a full engine rebuild?

Failing or dirty injectors can also cause severe overheating (due to overly lean mixture) that might lead to head gasket failure. I remember somebody here had his valves burned or something due to this.

I agree with Arawn. Same thing happened to me couple months back. Head and head cover was properly cleaned and head gasket replaced.

I’m planning to do whatever once I open it up. I agree that the head gasket could be a symptom of another problem. The plan is to put oil in it now for corrosion reduction over the next month until I can drop the motor and put it on a bench. I may just look for a wrecked bike motor. But at this point I don’t want to tear it down. I just want to put oil in it and prevent any further problem inside. Does that make sense? What oil would you throw in it just for that? Once I bench it I’ll keep everyone updated.
