At 12k, your valves are most likely going to be fine. Even at 18k I only had one exhaust valve that was slightly out of its range. It wasn't until 27k that I had to adjust most of my valves. If you're willing to do some searching and reading there's a plethora of information on this forum to help you out. I know the feeling, it can be a little intimidating your first time but take notes, take photos and you should be just fine. Picking up a service manual will be your best friend in the long run. Happy wrenching.

About to try the 12,000 mile service on my 2013 STR or have my motorcycle mechanic friend do it.

Just ordered the DealerTool diagnostic equipment and waiting it to be delivered from the UK.

I'll also be ordering the factory manual shortly. Can anyone tell me before hand what OEM parts I'll need to purchase?

I'm guessing air filter and spark plugs at least. What about the cam cover gasket or other cover gaskets?

And I read that I may have to jerry-rig tools to try and get some of the work done?

Triumph sell a service kit that has all the parts you will need for the 12K service.

That kit does not include oil or any valve shims, if needed.
