That's how I always do it, and I have feeler gauges with the same increments as yours. Always measure after you put in the new shim and you'll know if you're close enough to the middle of spec.

You can use the app + Bluetooth for any year, but on 06-12 it can only check error codes & do maintenance stuff. To reflash the ECU you need the cable + computer software.
