In my experience, a failing CPS will result in no spark. If there is spark, then the ECU at least thinks it knows the crank position.

The CPS seems to be the most common problem with our bikes, but it wouldn't explain why your bike wouldn't start until bump starting. Neither would a fuel pump or relay. I've replaced my CPS twice....

Vibration can cause loose electrical connections to lose connectivity briefly resulting in brief loss of power. I've had that happen to me and seen it happen on track, although not on a Triumph.

You could probably prop up the tank to remove the airbox, but it is really easy to remove the tank and it gives you more room to work. You already remove the the front 2 bolts to prop it up....
