Ignore him. I've always liked the look of the reflectors. Also if you're street riding at night you need side visibility so either reflective rim tape or reflectors. Welcome to the forum have fun with your new toy.

I don't really like them, but I'm honestly not a huge fan of rim tape either. So they're staying for now

I have black reflective rim tape on mine. You don't see it unless you're looking very closely.
