Somewhat extensive, but I like to put people in my shoes.
So last Friday I was simply heading back home to my hometown for Oktoberfest, and so that I could store by bike for the winter and for my study abroad trip next semester/summer. I figured it would be a good idea to have someone, aka my dad, to take care of my bike while I will be away. So I packed everything up and took off. Within my 3 hour drive, I stopped about half way there and got gas, but before I stopped I noticed the bike was acting weird, gauge was wacky, and it almost killed. After I filled it up, when I went to re-start it, the starter relay just clicked and nothing happened. So I tried it a couple of times and could not get it started, finally I had a guy come over and jump it and it was running just fine. So I left the gas station and got about 4 miles down the road, and the fuel light came on (right after I filled up), then the check engine light came on, then the needle inside that gauge went all wacky and the bike just shut off completely and I rolled to the side of the road in the middle of nowhere (this all happened within about 20 seconds). So I hitched a ride into town where I proceeded to find a battery, which is a bitch I might add cause the 675's take a specific fuc**ing one. I met this guy at a hardware store the helped me out so much, offered to give me money, rides, anything I needed he said he would help. So I went to his house and looked at the forum what could possibly be the issue and came to the conclusion that it was the R/R... So i figured if it was just the battery then a new one would solve the problem and I would be good to go. But on the flip side if it was the R/R, then I would put my old battery on a charger to top it off as much as I could and then buy a new battery so that I could run off the new battery's reserve, and then when the bike killed again, just switch the batteries out and make it home. So I had it all planned out...so I thought... After I left the town, I made it almost all the way home, about 5 miles away from my house on the interstate, and she killed (from using the new battery). I figured I should be able to make it home no problem off the old battery's top off charge. Well when the bike killed I had to pull off the the left side of the road...on the interstate...with rush hour/holiday traffic, so I was trying to hurry and take the seat off so I could switch the battery...inserted the key into the battery tray, and CLICK, the key broke off inside the battery tray and the debris door shut... YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! SERIOUSLY???? Needless to say, it took me a total of 8 hours to get somewhere that should have only taken me 2:45. Anyway, where do I go from here? I obviously know I need a new R/R so where is the best place to buy one, quality product, etc. My house is in between 2 dealerships so it will not pay to load it up and haul it to one of them. I basically will have to do the install myself, and pay for it...FML. Then as far as the key goes, I don't even have a clue where to start.... Do I need a new lock set and keys, or do some of the bikes have the same keys. Any help would be appreciated... Sting

Can you get the broken part of the key out? I had a key break and I took the 2 pieces to a locksmith who was able to copy and make a new set off the broken key. There is a big recall on R/R's right now. I went to the dealership and talked them into letting me just take the R/R when it came in and do it myself since my bike was known to them to be a track bike and they knew I was capable to do it myself. They just had me sign the papers as if it was done with them and I was on my way. Idk if they will let you do the same, but its worth a try. The R/R would be free of charge as well as labor if you take it to a dealership. Good luck and sorry for your unlucky streak.

That is some luck you have there. Luckily, a broken key and R/R recall seem to be minor fixes. On a side note, this retelling is in dire need of a few line breaks and paragraph breaks. This stream of consciousness thing is killing my eyes

Id like to help you out, but my brain hurts just looking at that novel. Seperate into some paragraphs, and maybe ill be able to think straight.

The r/r is worth the drive to your dealer if they will let you take it. Trouble is, given you ran it the way you did, you might want to test your stator as well, just in case... It sucks to through new parts at something just to realize the problem is either bigger than you thought or not at all what you thought.

I'd say almost certainly the R/R, especially if your bike is about a 2010 model or earlier. If the R/R has gone bad then it may have taken the stator and battery with it, if so Triumph should cover their replacement too.
Put your new battery on charge of 48 hours continuos, that way it will last a lot longer. And please use some paragraphs next time.

I'm not going to be much help with your R/R issue, but I did have an idea as far as your key goes. If you can't get the broken key out of the lock, try putting some quick drying superglue on the base end where the key snapped off and carefully hold it against the rest of it until it dries. You should then be able to at least take the broken part out of the lock. Use that to make a spare or three.
Also, paragraphs are your friend. |
