Default Daytona As A First Bike?

As you may know I decided to sell my 2010 SE because I have the new BMW S1000RR due in later this month and are simply so much alike I think I'm going to replace the 675 with a STriple.
Anyway, I've had quite a few calls from young people (I'm 58 and have 46 years in the saddle, so anyone under 40 is young to me) that are interested in it and have no seat time what so ever. To these young-uns I've given them other bikes to find and get the seat time in for a year or so. One of my friends was just telling me that I was wrong in doing that, he thinks if that is the bike they want, let them buy it. He is thinking why waste time on a bike they didn't really want, just get the bike they want and ride it with the respect needed to learn properly.
I'm just not comfortable letting a novice rider grab one of these and run out on day one thinking those wheelies in the movies and on TV look cool.
What are your thoughts?

I sold bikes for a living and I did my best to steer new riders away from 600+ sportbikes. The one time I didn't stick with my own rule, the dude crashed right in front of the shop after signing the paperwork. He was OK, but I felt so bad I ended up quitting. You don't want that or something worse on your conscience, don't sell the bike to new riders.

That is exactly what concerns me, I appreciate your post, it confirms my position.

Yep, try and educate them and don't sell them something they will destroy. That's some integrity right there.

I say don't do it. If YOU feel that it's wrong to sell a sportbike to a newbie kid, you're going to regret going against your instincts, no matter what anybody else says.
Good for you for doing what's right.

We must be neighbors, I'm in Memphis. Are you one of the pair of red tunas that work in Barlett, TN?

I got a Daytona as my first bike AND my second. (the wife ran over the first one, and then it got stolen). I have been riding for a couple years now, and have *knock on wood* never been down. If you think the "kid" is mature enough to handle the bike, make your money.

Statistics don't lie. But if you don't sell one to them, somebody else will. Mind as well take the poor kids money and hope you don't see his name in the obits.
