Yeah, I'm expecting some mixed feedback. Just looking for some supporting evidence towards a certain brand or reassurance. Definitely like the fact you haven't had any issues in 5 years, but I also vaguely recall reading somewhere that K&N switched their manufacturer recently and people noticed a decline in quality. Have not fact checked this however.
I remember hearing something about the oil return hole being to small or something like that. I believe it was a small and short lived issue. Either way, I'm happy with K&N and I'll continue to use them.
There are a lot of opinions. Most of them are just as good as the others. There are some bad ones though like FRAM but I don't think they even make filters for bikes. I use K&N for the bolt on the end but it is made by the same people that make the Mobil 1 filter and is identical according to some people that know more than I do. Here is a study I read a while back that tested some different brands, but it was for car filters. I would guess the quality stays the same across to the motorcycle side of things.
that's pretty much exactly why i use and recommend them
my service department is adamant on OEM EVERYTHING. but it's annoying that oem filters need a particular sized oil filter cap-wrench thing, right? or a goofy 'universal' band-tool?
the techs have said that the nut on the K&N filters have popped off on them before. but maybe that's related to the manufacturer?
also, i've personally witnessed a bad K&N filter that leaked immediately after installation.
that said, i pretty much use only K&N oil filters when available
K&N had a huge rash of filters cracking across the face where the nut is tacked to them. So many in fact that they have been banned in nearly all racing series in the USA.
OEM is the only way to go and the only company that will stand behind a failure.

Track days don't have restrictions like that. However I have seen the inspection people around here telling people about it and suggesting different brands.
K&N filters have the nut for REMOVAL ONLY. Hand tightening is the way to install. People experiencing leaks is likely because they installed using the nut.
No the failures were caused by the way they were tack welding them. Some of the pictures make it very obvious that the entire face was being held under stress and cracked from thermal fatigue.
Coming from the car world I never really considered this a potential issue. On my last oil change I was buying Amsoil oil so I just went and bought the Amsoil filter, any positives or negatives on that?
WMRRA has banned Aftermarkets from use. Mainly to the new R1's blowing filters and dumping oil all over the track. One let loose going into T1 at The Ridge and did take out three bikes with him. I run only OEM.
On pretty much all my bikes I have used Bosch 3300 car filters. Never had an issue. I used to use purolator until they started having issues with tearing in the pleats.
I didn't know that a OEM Honda filter will work. Been riding CBR's for years and have a bunch of filters. And they are easy to find. My closet Triumph dealer in 1 hour away.
Daytona and Street Triple use a KN204. Here's the link to all the models of bikes that use the same filter. So it's likely that the OEM filter for most of these bikes would work on our bikes.
I only use oem oil filter in my Daytona and Tacoma.
