My bike had the Arrow stage 3 full exhaust when I bought it. The header cracked and now there is a big hole. I took it to someone to fix, but he made it worse and says I need new headers. Apparently the exhaust has been discontinued by Triumph. What are my options? If I switch to stock headers, I will take a performance hit. Could I use the headers from a Akrapovic system? If I use anything other than the Arrow stage 3 headers, I need to get my bike re-tuned, right?
Year of the bike? Could always get decatted headers by MJS or there's a member here who does it as well.
If it's a 13+ bike there's only a few options, the 2 mentioned above, Hindle (but in another thread there's pics of crappy welds) or paying out the ass for a full Akra system. Bodis in the UK make some as well I think.
It's a 2012. With the MJS headers, I would still need to get the bike re-tuned, right? I'm trying to avoid that. I just found A9600440. Bikebandit doesn't list fitment for a 2012, but triumphparts.calmoto.com does. It looks like it is a side-mount exhaust. Will that work?
Not to my knowledge, I think I've seen pics of pre 13 bikes being converted to low mount exhausts but that probably takes a good amount of fabricating your own mounts and stuff.
As far as remapping the bike if switching to MJS or another brand, probably for 100% optimal fuelling, but it might be close enough to not run like shit or lose too much power. I don't know enough to say, I was just listing the possibilities I knew of.
Yeah, probably. In the meantime, I ordered the MJS headers and hopefully all the OEM hardware I need (flange, gaskets, etc). I'm hoping the Arrow muffler from the full system will fit on the MJS headers like a slip-on. Then I can still use my race bike while I try to find a good welder if the other guy didn't mess it up beyond repair. If I ever get the headers fixed so I can run them again, I'll have the MJS headers as a backup.
There's a huge difference between a decatted header and an Arrow Race header. You'll see the pipe diameter difference immediately. Power output is nowhere near the same.
That's a bit rough mate. Your fabricator needs a severe talking to. Feel free to post up some pics of the carnage aswell.
As far as fitting you arrow STG3 can to the MJS headers, you might want to utilise the stage 3 link pipe and modify the MJS headers to marry up to your link pipe then the rest should all be a bolt up job.
It is a pretty big step up though as I believe the MJS header outlet where the OEM link pipe would connect is 45mm and your arrow stage 3 link pipe is 60mm.
Try not to hack up or modify the arrow stage 3 gear to suit, any modification should be done to the MJS header as you know that the arrow parts cannot be replaced. Good luck.
Well the Akrapovic headers are meant to be used with a slip-on, so it must use the OEM 45mm midpipe size. Maybe I should order the A9600440 Arrow system, and hopefully either the headers can be swapped or I can swap the entire system? I really hate lowering the performance of my bike.
I really don't want to try retro-fitting the Arrow midpipe to the MJS header. I called MJS about cancelling my order. They are very helpful and want to help me out. Even if it means repairing my Arrow header. I'll try to get the headers off tonight so I can send pics.
Attached photos. MJS says don't even bother sending it in. I'm still waiting to hear back from a local fabricator. It was just a crack all the way around before. It looks like I lost some material from the welding attempt.
Wow what an idiot. Way too much heat. It can still be fixed but it will take a talented welder to do it.
Looking closer at the edges it may not have been just the welder. The edges of the weld look rusted and thin. You've had these headers wrapped it look like. That can add performance by increasing pipe temps but that also burns off material over time. Those pipes may be toast if they've gotten too thin.
I've got an appointment here starting 9/12. I guess I'm not going to get any track days before my next race. They quoted me $500-$550 labor. They will remove about an inch of titanium corroded from the steel welding and replace it with a piece that is pre-drilled for the tube connecting the pipes.
I just dropped if off at that shop yesterday. Today they called me and said they were able to locate a replacement header pipe for about $350. The only problem is it could take 2-3 weeks for shipping and I'm already registered for races on 9/24! I appreciate them trying to save me money to avoid the repair costs, but I'm leaning towards the repair to make sure I don't miss my races. He is going to quote out the repair to include material. What is really aggravating is I kept calling my local Triumph dealer and they couldn't help me out with anything (out-of-stock and discontinued). This shop works with a local Triumph dealer and within an hour is ready to order a replacement pipe for me. If the dealer I was talking to could have done that, it might be fixed by now!
It's fixed! I'm picking it up tomorrow. I'll try to get the headers off for a better pic later. I need to get ready for this weekend. They removed and replaced a bit of Ti like they said they would. The patch looks like it goes about half way around the pipe. The little tube welded to the patch that slides inside the tube connected to the other header is new.
I took it to TF Works (Touge Factory). They're really a car place, but I figured performance exhaust should be similar enough between a bike and a car. The shop was full of race cars. I'm probably lucky I found a place like this so close.
Jesus, you can't catch a break. No way that should have cracked like that with a decent weld job.
