Not a huge priority but I noticed the rear sets/foot pegs collected some gunk/build-up over the years. Looks like it is superficial (a claybar actually takes most of it off) and was wondering if I could soak them in something so they look like new again? I think they are aluminum but not sure?
this will sound stupid, but... Lemon Pledge ...spray a bit on, let it sit a minute, wipe vigorously with a clean rag. it's a cheap alternative to the harsh chemicals they market for cleaning off road grime, and works really well on all the hard bits (painted or raw). side benefit is that it does a marginally decent job at repelling dust too, heh.
if you want to bring a deeper shine out of the aluminum after that, you can't go wrong with some metal polish on a buffing wheel.
Rather than WD40, use kerosene. It's basically the main ingredient in WD40 that cleans, and doesn't have any of the lubricant additives. Also less harsh than oven/brake cleaner.
I gave WD-40 a quick try but no luck. It's not really dirt but kind of a film that you can scratch off with your finger nail. Hard to describe without seeing it; I'll try to take a pic when I have a minute.
Hmm. There's Simple Green, vinegar, mineral spirits, fast orange, car wash concentrate, brake cleaner, carb cleaner, synthetic motor oil (I've found this is an excellent degreaser), gasoline, brake fluid, Coke, bleach...
Not much help on deciding which to use next, but if you want, shoot me a PM to drop by and you can see if anything in my garage will do the trick.
