I'm interested I getting a tank bag for carrying a few small things, and really like the idea of magnetic mounts for convenience, but I often have to carry hard drives and headphones for work and I'm worried about the magnets ruining them. Is anyone using any of the type that mount to the gas cap? I have a 2012 street triple...
I would definitely see TJ at riders discount for the best price and service
I always have flash drives, and my phone on/ in the bag somewhere when i am riding.
It also comes in with a built in rain wrap/ fly so if you encounter weather, it rolls over top and snugs up nicely... i have been in MANY rain storms and was playing music on my phone/Bluetooth the whole time. no worries.
Advice for any magnetic tank bag, make sure you wipe off the bottom of the bag before and after taking it off the tank, to avoid tank scratches.
and this bag has plenty of storage, and even comes with straps to be worn like a back pack if you don't/ cant leave it on the bike when you get on foot. I do this a lot for school or work.
It's nice and compact at 12 liters but if you unzip the bottom, there are panels that can be pushed down and it goes to 18 liters.
As for the magnetic part, this one has flaps so that when you take it off the panels fold in and are held in place by magnets - what this means is that the part that touches your tank is always covered. I never have to wipe down the bottom of the bag because of this. All I need to ensure is that the tank surface itself is clean before I put the bag on it.
This also converts into a backpack by pulling out some hidden straps.
Perfect commuter bag for me. I highly recommend it.
No experience from me. All I can add is that Cortech appear to make well thought out bags, and they do offer a bag (the Dryver line) that attaches to a gas-cap thingy. I didn't go that route because the largest bag they make that does this is 9 liters. So, if 9 liters or less is ok with you, this might be a bag line you would want to look at.
Three other features of my bag (and I think the Dryver line as well, but not positive):
1) It comes with a really nice face shield cover. This is so that you can put a face shield in it and it goes right inside the bag, up against the outline of the bag so that it takes up minimal space. This is for those that might want to carry a clear/dark tint alternate face shield.
2) It comes with a bag to hold a water bladder and a portal and clip on the bag to allow the tube to come out and be held in place.
3)Has built-in rain cover.
Good luck on your search - unfortunately I can't help with your core question. From what Cortech is offering though, and this is just an extrapolation, but perhaps the use of a gas-cap attachment means that you will be forced to carry less weight than can be carried in the magnetic or strap-down bags. I know for my bag, they say 10 lbs max. But I would suspect that the strap-down version can carry more. I imagine it comes down to whether the weight will rip the magnets off the tank - or in the case of the gas cap if it will break the plastic part that attaches to your gas tank.
I am using a Bags Connection tankbag by SW Motech. I picked it up used from another Triumph owner so I don't know what model it is. It has the old style gas cap ring so is not that nice looking with the bag off but I only take it off to fill up or wash the bike. Works real well, very secure and easy to take off. The new style rings are lower profile, Givi makes a similar set up too.
I'm leaning towards the SW motech bag... Looks like a nice set up, even if a bit expensive. Appreciate the feedback. Let me know if anyone else has any thoughts. Thanks again!
