10 years in, and I'm off to the next adventure. While I've been absent for a number of years, there's still a few of the originals on here I wanted to say goodbye to. This forum has given me a ton of info, inspiration, and camaraderie over the years. My last few road trips and a recent track day at Laguna Seca were the signals that it was time to find a new home for the Daytona. I was 6 seconds off my pace and felt like I was flying, I got slow and was riding tentatively. This is due to the fact that I just haven't been riding enough to keep the rust off. And not riding much because anything more than an hour on the bike and my hands would be completely numb, cramping up. Hip flexor would tighten up until it felt like a charlie horse.
So I narrowed down the field to bikes in the Sport Touring vein. The short list ended up with the Triumph Sprint and Tiger. Honda VFR800 and CBR1100xx. BMW K1200. And Ducati ST3. I wanted something I could convince my wife to jump on the back and blast up the coast for an overnight getaway so passenger comfort was a big factor.
VFR, just too vanilla. CBR1100xx was well considered. I've put close to 100k miles on a bunch of CBR's. I love 'em but it's an old familiar ride and I'm just not craving much over 145mph anymore these days.
Sprint, not very comfy for the passenger but damn tempting otherwise. Tiger does a lot of things well, but ascetically it just doesn't move me at all.
BMW I took out for a very spirited ride along HWY 1 and put it through it's paces. all the HP and Torque somehow don't translate to plastering a silly grin across my face.
Which leads me to the Duc. Sexy as hell, comfy for passenger. Sounds like heaven through the staintune exhaust, generates smile inducing power in a lot of real world rpm ranges.
I found a museum quality 2005 ST3 in West Virginia with less than 2,000 miles for a seriously good deal. So the wife and I are flying from SFO to West Virginia, riding the bike to visit some musician friends in Nashville, for bbq in Memphis, for Blues in Mississippi, and then off for food-drinks-and-jazz in New Orleans. We ship the bike home from there and fly home. 900 miles in 4 days, first motorcycle road trip for the wife and good way to get to know the new mistress.
Cheers all, hope to see you out on the road sometime!

Where and when are you heading to WV, if you are near the Fairmont area shoot me a PM or if you want to try a couple of roads or routes back from WV into OH, I'd be glad to offer you some info. I'm somewhat like you in that I don't ride my Daytona as much as I once did, or frequent track days as much, I'll turn 58 in the fall and standard and adventure bikes hold more appeal to me now, but I still like a romp on my Daytona every now and then, selling it or trading it has crossed my mind. I've been looking at the FZ 10 and it offers a lot of what I'm looking for comfort, good handling, and plenty of power, there are some other bikes I've considered but when I demoed this bike it felt right. I have 3 Triumphs 11 Daytona SE, 09 STR, 12 Tiger 800 plus a Suzuki 750(05) that I've used for track, I'm not riding as much as I used to but still want to ride and don't need or want the upkeep of 4 bikes.
This forum and Advrider are my two go to places for bike info most of the time, there are what seems to be many like minded riders here that like performance but try to emphasize the responsibility of doing it, plus offer good advice about the 675 in either Street Triple or Daytona guise. Enjoy your new ride, plus the ride to Nashville and Mississippi for music should be enjoyable. Happy trail and safe travel.
big fan of the ST3. nice buy! I joined this forum a few years ago but ended up selling my 07 Daytona within a year of ownership when I bought an 07 VFR800. I was going towards the sport touring mode of life too. Irony, I just sold that 07 VFR not too long ago and bought a 15 675R but had to add helibars.
now that I can afford it, I'm looking to get a Ninja 1000 as a upright bike with luggage as a second ride. Hope you enjoy the ST3, riding with luggage is fun in its own way!
btw, out of state bikes require a minimum of 7500 miles on the odo to register in California. My original 07 Daytona was used and I had to strip the entire bike down in the DMV parking lot for the vin and engine verification as well as the CARB sticker on the intake verification. that was a sight.

Looks like all imported Ducati's are 50 state models so it should not be a hassle. If so, i've plenty of family in Oregon so I'll just register it there if needed :wink3:
My West Virginia geography is a tad sketchy, so i'm not familiar with Fairmont but I'm flying into Huntington so pretty much a stones throw from Kentucky. I've got an old friend I used to be in a band with who's in Asheville NC I may pop in and surprise. Looks like I'm landing 8-6-17 and rolling out of WV 8-7-17.
