Looking good!! Really fun ride! We're there a shit ton of cops up there?? Lately I only run it way early or way late, even at night some, because the cops are freaking everywhere!!!
Really great weather down here in TN land though!
We got lucky on the weather, and I don't recall seeing a single cop on 129 or Cherohala the 4 days we were running them. What I love about the Dragon is that you can have a blast without excessive speed, keeping it cool-ish on the straights and maintaining corner speed. The Cherohala on the other hand calls for a pretty brisk pace...:smile2:
The skyway is hands down my favorite ride around here! i do it at least once a week.. if not the skyway/dragon combo.
hmmm.. glad you lucked out. I usually dont ride like an idiot on the dragon... to many other idiots, but one day i was going about 15... sore as shit and just didnt want to hit the corners, so i was just cruising.... cop was standing at a turn off and when i passed he jumped on my, blue lights, and i had to keep going till the next pull off
we then had a nice discussion about how my bike 'looked' fast... and that i needed to keep it at an 'even pace'.... obviously he hasnt done it long... he *****ed at me for preceding to the next pull off before i stopped... i told him that i didnt want to die.. didnt want HIM to die.. or anyone else for that matter
i worked 4 of the wrecks up there last year on the ambulance including a fatality.
he gave me a warning.. but since then i have had a bitter taste in my mouth about the dragon this season
and my God the harleys.... im all for crusing... but when you are 2 up on the dragon/ side by side... thats asking for trouble
blows my mind
anyways.. rant over..
Glad you had a great trip!
next time you hit it, give me a call... always looking to meet fellow triumph guys... cause NO ONE around knoxville/ east TN (sept for your Harcourty) rides one!!!!
Im headed up there June 25-28 or so.. It'll be my first time up there doing the Cherohala and Dragon (have ridden the Cashiers/Highlands area before). Ordered the Butler map of southern Appalachia so that should be helpful.
Tad, where you coming in from?? You harcourt and I could meet up and ride it all. If you arnt familier with the area we could help you around or just explore and all get lost!! Haha.
Im riding up from Jackson, MS. I have a buddy that Im going to spend the night with that lives in Loudon, TN (intern at the Malibu factory).
The plan so far is to leave on the 25th and ride up to his place then going over to the dragon via the cherohala the next day and just stay over for a day or two... or three lol. I don't have to be back in MS until middle of the week so schedule is pretty flexible at the moment.
But that sounds good. I definitely am not familiar with the area at all, but if it's anything like Cashiers and Highlands I know there won't be cell service worth a damn to check google maps if i get lost haha.
Hahaha. Small world. I have worked in loudon county as a EMT/medic for 3 years now and my station is less than a mile from the mailbu plant. The loudon area is a great staging ground for every ride. Right off 411 and you can hit down to GA or right into NC from hwy68. I will definitely be around those dates. Got some good eats around there and some cool back roads.
I get way to excited about riding!!! Haha.
Cool! I'm riding mine from Jacksonville to Chicago in two weeks and was definitely planning on including this road in part of my route. Sounds like I should also include the Cherohala Skyway. Any other suggestions?
no fair, you guys have this in your back yard! I'd be there 2 weekdays out of every frickin' week (screw weekends, that's nuts) if it weren't a 20 hour drive.:crying:
Was up there Sunday. Great rides!!

I was also on the skyway when that near tornado hit. I can now say Pirelli Angel GT are great in the rain. Standing water on ground. Corners speeds up to 40 and straight away at 75 mph. No slip

Well I just got back from Italy, I rode the Stelvio Pass (6 times).
It's not just the Tail of the Dragon, it's the Whole Dragon.
For me, the Alps in particular the Dolomite's are a rides dream. (or nightmare..........:surprise: )
A friend, Murray, just got back from the Edelweiss Tour and had the same assessment. I'm quite jealous.
