So, I'm in the market for some tank grips. I foolishly got the Techspec C3s when I got the daytona a couple years ago. They're definitely slicker than the tank surface now.
I like the idea of stomp grips, but I don't want to be uncomfortable.
I like the idea of Snakeskins, but read here that HT Moto may be a hair better.
HT Moto has a crappy website.
So, I figure I can buy a sheet and have them cut! Only I'll have a lot of extra material, so I might as well sell a couple.
Anyone want in? I have the current C3 pads measured. I'll get a drawing up soon.
I'm also thinking that while I go custom, might as well make it unique. Shoot me some ideas, if anyone has any. Pondering the Triumph logo, or something.
Maybe the Union Jack or Old Glory silhouetted in the front part of the pads?
As for pricing, honestly in the air until I talk to the laser cutters next to my work. I'll do that if it seems that there is any interest in this at all.
id be down for the right price
and i like the volcano style of the stomp grip, and have more 'feel' with them than my tech spec (just a personal preference)
if you could cut varying depths on the sheet... that could be cool. have like 2 different models. one more sturdy and one less 'harsh'
I love my HT Moto pads, but since I plan on painting/wrapping my tank and other parts this winter I'm either looking at having to restick them to the tank afterwards, or deal with HT Moto's crappy site to buy another set. If these turn out nice looking I may be interested. The Triumph logo or Union Jack at the front would be a nice touch.
It may take some time, but I'll get there. Seems to be enough interest already to justify the material price. Still working on the drawings at work in my spare time, then we'll see how much the laser cutting costs..
edit:
see if i can attach a screenshot of the basic shape. the radiuses aren't perfect, and kinda thrown in there...
My problem really is that I'm short. I really only use the bottom 1.5 inches of my tank grips because of my leg length! I need to invest in some rearsets that will raise my feet higher so I can actually get my thighs into the "hooks" of the tank at the top!
Question for those interested, and those with experience with the material. Amazon recommends I buy the can of contact cement. I was thinking about using the aerosol form, as in 3m super 77. But if I am indeed selling this, I need a better option for the rest of you. Like double sided tape?

I'm currently using double sided tape on one of my TechSpecs. The glue was coming undone and it looked rotted! I just peeled it all off and started applying strip by strip of tape onto the TechSpecs. It's held up great with no issues of it sliding around due to the Nevada heat warming it up.
The order has been placed!
Hydro-Turf Molded Diamond Sheet Mat Material - Black SHT40MDPSABLK
Some pics show it as black diamonds on white background, others show all black. Also, I believe this already has 3M on the back.
As for the middle pad, I hadn't really given it much thought, but is certainly doable. Still haven't finished drawings to give to the laser cutters. :crying:
Attached is my crude beginning replication of the Union Jack. Still no sway from the peanuts on what designs yall want?
Kinda thinking about the Triumph T on the middle now.
SO! Just a little update, I finally got it drawn, and printed out a "set" to tape on the bike. As I didn't have the C3 middle pad to match to, I kinda guessed. It's modifiable. I'm already wanting to round out the corners a little more. Maybe up to the half inch radius as used on the side pieces. Should be attaching a couple images from imgur. We shall see.
What do you think? Something to get quoted for cut? Want to see a change if you were to put them on your bike? "675" on the side? Flag? Dickpic?:biggrinjester:
Well, the img tags aren't working, but the link seems to.
So, mocking this up, I figure the diamonds will go long way front to back on the sides, and top to bottom on the middle. Unless the consensus says no. Should be able to get 22 full sets.
Welp. No replies and I'm officially off the first page. I'm sure if they were for sale, interest would be there. Was just hoping to get input on preferences. Manufacturers don't always have the best designs, so innovation is never bad. I'll try to get a quote next week. Any input can still be accepted, but I'm moving forward with it.
No I am. I have been working more than anything lately. Laser cutters are wanting to stick to cutting metal, and have been told that water jetting could peel the 3m backing around the edge. Maybe that's why the techspec pads have a larger sticky region than the foam itself.
I'll be contacting other vendors, but not sure how fruitful I expect it to be. Also considering having cutting dies made.
And then, there is the option of sharp shears and a steady hand. Was really hoping to avoid that, in order to provide a quality piece for you guys that spend half as much time washing as riding.
Edit: still going to exhaust my professional options, but if it proves useless, how would you guys feel about me offering to hand cut them, and/or send you templates to trace and cut if you are ocd about your two wheeled baby...?
Got impatient. I bought some brand new wiss scissors and went to town. Then gave the edge a little bit of a chamfer with the Dremel. Really digging how the diamonds look. Hope the pictures have ok resolution.
Screw professionals. It's either too small or too risky.
I'm perfecting my technique on a set first. May get it acceptable this weekend, and slap it on the bike for some pics.
My methods so far is printing a scale drawing, cutting it out, aligning and taping it to the back of the mat. Carefully cut the mat, holding the template and re taping as I go. With the side pieces, I am a stickler for symmetry, and tape them together back to back. I then Dremel the edges to perfection. The definition of perfection is still evolving. So far, it is a flat side up until the height of the diamonds, then a 30ish degree chamfer through the diamond height. It is tricky, because you can't just slide the Dremel across. The diamonds themselves are a lot more material to remove.
