Starting to look more and more like a Michael Schumacher-type situation. I have never heard anyone - fellow racer, pit crew, fan or otherwise, say anything negative (and true) about Nicky. Probably the hardest-working rider in WSBK and a great guy to boot. Really, really shitty deal. Man, bicycles are dangerous.
The latest info I've heard is that the trauma is so bad that there's nothing that can be done surgically and the doctors are saying that there is zero chance of recovery.
The family has been keeping this quiet but the reason they're all there now is to say goodbye before pulling the plug.
It's a huge shame. I hope an Italian motorcycle mob doesn't hurt the person that drove the car too much. From what I've heard the Italians loved Nicky.

It's kind of hinted at in the press releases. They mention severe or serious polytrauma and seriuos cerebal damage. Then there's the use of "extremely" critical condition. That's a quote from the doctors. What's worse than critical? Then the last part is the "reserved diagnosis". There's bits an pieces leaking out which very well could be rumors but it seems to be coming from people that are close to the Hayden's or the hospital he's in and seem to fit between the lines of the news reports. I really hope it's just conjecture and rumor but I think for myself I'm preparing myself for the worst. It really looks that way to me.
More information about the accident itself. It sounds a bit like it was Nicky's fault. Came on to the main road from a side road without stopping if I read the translation correctly.
FYI to anybody reading about this death this morning, it's not true. Nicky's dad said that article is a lie and he's still alive on life support, and not in a medically induced coma. Hang in there Nicky.
MacBandit, (long time no see, BTW) thanks for posting that link to the Roadracing World release and clarification from John Ulrich. I found it earlier today and was pleased John clarified the details with Earl Hayden.
Still... very saddened by the accident. Throughout his career, Nicky's been a great ambassador for our sport regardless of what series he's competed in. I had the opportunity to chat with him back in '02 at Mid-Ohio during his AMA Superbike championship winning campaign, as our team was competing in that same race. He was very friendly, cordial, genuine and mature for his age. He was only about 21 and that year, went on to become the youngest AMA Superbike champ. From what I've read, following his career over the years, he's maintained this character. Countless positive comments have poured in from racers from all forms of competition wishing him strength and prayers. I certainly feel the same.
I sure hope it was not Nicky's fault but regardless and most importantly, let's hope and pray for a full recovery.
Godspeed #69, prayers and condolences to his family, friends, and fans everywhere, just a terrible ordeal for everyone. I never met him but he was always a good role model and consummate professional throughout his career. I'm sure he that way as person to those who knew him, he worked hard, dedicated his life to his profession, he never gave up even when others had written him off, he always had a ride. There are many great racers that never won a world championship, he did, he won at almost every level he competed in, was humble in victory and defeat, I'm glad to have seen him race.
"Right after he crossed the finish line at Valencia in 2006 to win the MotoGP title, Nicky Hayden was given an American flag that he carried with him to parc ferme. Was it handed to him by an American fan present at the Spanish circuit? Think again... The back story behind the American flag that Hayden carried on his 2006 MotoGP championship victory lap
Nicky Hayden touched many lives in a very positive manner during his time...this is just one story
Terrible news for sure. I'm still sad about it RIP brother!
