What can go wrong, will go wrong...
Somewhat extensive, but I like to put people in my shoes.
So last Friday I was simply heading back home to my hometown for Oktoberfest, and so that I could store by bike for the winter and for my study abroad trip next semester/summer. I figured it would be a good idea to have someone, aka my dad, to take care of my bike while I will be away. So I packed everything up and took off. Within my 3 hour drive, I stopped about half way there and got gas, but before I stopped I noticed the bike was acting weird, gauge was wacky, and it almost killed. After I filled it up, when I went to re-start it, the starter relay just clicked and nothing happened. So I tried it a couple of times and could not get it started, finally I had a guy come over and jump it and it was running just fine. So I left the gas station and got about 4 miles down the road, and the fuel light came on (right after I filled up), then the check engine light came on, then the needle inside that gauge went all wacky and the bike just shut off completely and I rolled to the side of the road in the middle of nowhere (this all happened within about 20 seconds). So I hitched a ride into town where I proceeded to find a battery, which is a ***** I might add cause the 675's take a specific fuc**ing one. I met this guy at a hardware store the helped me out so much, offered to give me money, rides, anything I needed he said he would help. So I went to his house and looked at the forum what could possibly be the issue and came to the conclusion that it was the R/R... So i figured if it was just the battery then a new one would solve the problem and I would be good to go. But on the flip side if it was the R/R, then I would put my old battery on a charger to top it off as much as I could and then buy a new battery so that I could run off the new battery's reserve, and then when the bike killed again, just switch the batteries out and make it home. So I had it all planned out...so I thought... After I left the town, I made it almost all the way home, about 5 miles away from my house on the interstate, and she killed (from using the new battery). I figured I should be able to make it home no problem off the old battery's top off charge. Well when the bike killed I had to pull off the the left side of the road...on the interstate...with rush hour/holiday traffic, so I was trying to hurry and take the seat off so I could switch the battery...inserted the key into the battery tray, and CLICK, the key broke off inside the battery tray and the debris door shut... YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! SERIOUSLY????
Needless to say, it took me a total of 8 hours to get somewhere that should have only taken me 2:45.
Anyway, where do I go from here? I obviously know I need a new R/R so where is the best place to buy one, quality product, etc. My house is in between 2 dealerships so it will not pay to load it up and haul it to one of them. I basically will have to do the install myself, and pay for it...FML. Then as far as the key goes, I don't even have a clue where to start.... Do I need a new lock set and keys, or do some of the bikes have the same keys.
Any help would be appreciated...
