I thought the headlights needed to be plugged in in order to get the bike to start/run?

Only the fuse has to be in. The headlight fuse is common with the starter so that I believe is what you are thinking about.

Mac is right, a local guy cracked the headlight glass with a cover. I had warned him

I tried covers without turning off the lights once and the foam insert in the cover started burning. Now I have interrupted each light circuit with a switch (under the seat) and flip them off at the track before covering (or taping - depending on org).
