I am almost certain it is my stator that is going....but I wanted to ask around before I pull it. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that when I fire her up, she's a bit hesitant. The other day she wouldn't start at all. I put her on the charger for a bit, and got her fired up. The weird part is, that when she runs, the voltage drops. Then when I turn her off, the voltage increases on the battery. Strange....anybody else have this happen to their bike?

Check the rectifier/regulator along with the stator.

What's the testing procedure for the stator and reg/rec? I'm having problems as well and couldn't find it in the service manual. The service manual for my old bike had step by step for the charging system, continuity between such and such wires, this resistance between these wires, etc. and pinpointed what component was bad.

Open the stator cover... it's easy to do. Have a spare gasket ready just in case you tear the existing one. The coils are supposed to be a shiny orange/copper color... if any of them are black/charred then you need to have the stator replaced.

This is a bad stator...worth checking first as I paid $140 for a rectifier I did not need. Of course now I get 14.35 volts at idle.

Thanks for the info guys. I was on my third batt. and then decided to scan the threads, my stator looks like the bad stator pic above. It also smells like burned when removing the cover. Managed to keep the gasket intact, waiting for new stator coming this week. I noticed inside the stator cover was some lube <~~~no clue, any ideas?

What is the condition of your battery? how old, left on a battery tender?
What are the numbers? Voltage check.....your voltage should be close to the below numbers. If your battery is new and the charging system working correctly....the voltage should be close to this: Engine & key off. ![]() Engine off, ignition & lights on ![]() Engine running & lights on: ![]() ![]() PS.......looks like you found the problem.

Bummer on the new stator! I make checking voltage part of my routine... I've yet to have a stator or R/R fail in 7 yrs of riding. Another thing I do is meticulously clean ALL ground points and check primary wires/connections. The idea is to try to alleviate any potential for voltage draw or ground issues. So far, so good. Good luck with the new stator!
