I was hit with a pretty good one yesterday.

Bystander: Nice bike! What kind is it?
Me: Triumph Street Triple
Bystander: Cool, who makes it?
Me: Uh, lol, Triumph
Bystander: Oh, OK, I thought Triumph just made cars?
Me: I just laugh a little and go about my business.

So today, I decided I was going to stop sitting on the bike in the garage and making "Vroom Vroom" noises, and go for a ride. (35 degrees didn't seem that bad)

I decide while I'm out that I'll get the parts to do that helmet lock mod, but first I stop at GameStop.

I'm in there talking to one of sales people and a guy walks in.

Guy: Who's bike is that outside?
Me: It's mine. You like it?
Guy: Yeah, it's a Honda right?
Me: Nah, it's a Triumph. Daytona 675, to be exact.
Guy: Oh, ok. How many cc's? Like 500 or something?
Me: Uh, 675.
Guy: Oh, that's cool. I ride too. It's too cold for me though..
Me: So, what do you ride?
Guy: I got a ZX6R. Lowered and stretched 3in. Blue LEDs. Custom white paint. And a whole lotta chrome.
Me: Oh, thats cool...

After that, I had nothing more to say. He then pays for his stuff and leaves. No more than 2 seconds after the door closes, me and the sales guy start laughing hysterically! At least it wasn't a Gixxer, right?

This thread is brilliant. Gotta start way back with me;

About two years ago, back when I was riding my bicycle, I was coming out of a Denny's, and this old guy (70 or 80) was watching a Miata pull out of the lot, and struck up a conversation with me about cars. I admitted I'm more of a two-wheel guy, pointing to my bike. His eyebrows raised and he started on about how he used to own a Norton which he later made a Triton. This conversation went on for at least a half hour before I decided to check and see which of these companies he was mentioning were still in business. That's how I found out about Triumphs.

Fast forward to my Daytona purchase a month or so ago. Already people are asking questions, but much like the old guy years ago people here in Vegas aren't as clueless as what I've seen on this thread (that I've encountered, anyway). Most go along the lines of "I used to own ____" or "It's gorgeous, I didn't know they made sports bikes". If there's time I'll inform them of the triple's strengths and other neat stuff about Triumphs.

One recent example was while I was poking around the casino parking lots on the strip. On the next level down there was a Porsche club meeting parked in a group, along with two guys (from out of town, on a road trip) in a Lancer Evo. One of those guys flagged me down to tell me how wicked my (stock) exhaust sounds, and that led to conversation about my bike. He knew about Triumphs but only as far as "they're in business". He happened to own an R6 and was delighted to hear about how awesome triples were. Again, another pleasant conversation with a curious, intelligent fellow.

I can only recall one hilarious moment, which happened while I was in Pahrump Saturday for the Picture Game thread. I was gassing up and virtually every local with a view of my bike had the best expression I've ever seen. Seriously. Imagine a good 20 people at a crowded gas station staring at my bike like it was going to murder them.:gah: I nearly fell off my bike laughing.

sitting at a stoplight the other day on the beach front, noticed a kid walking with his gf, he seemed to be getting antsy bout something, then it hit me, he was gonna ask something bout my bike, so finally he yells out, "what kind of bike is that"!
Me, I point to the tank and say quietly thru my helmet Triumph then take off. "saved by the green light"

The one I have been getting a lot recently is,
"How fast will it go?"
Well it depends on how I have it geared and what track it is on
"Oh, I had a bike up to 120 once. That is crazy fast."

Serisously, I have had this conversation probably 4 times in the past two weeks

I have only been asked that on my Daytona once, and I said the same thing that I did when I was asked that on my 94 Intruder (strangely, I was asked that on the Intruder a lot.). Depending on my mood:
"fast enough to make sushi of squids"
"fast enough to kill the idiot riding it"

i hate when people ask how "fast" something goes. that term relates to 2 things.

a top speed itself can be fast but it does not make something fast.

When I was getting my license the Highway Patrolman asked me that same question "How fast will it go?" My response was "In your state Sir, the speed limit." He smiled and we continue on.

There is a BIG difference between QUICK and FAST. Both would be great, but you most always end up with quick. I'll take it. A QUICK run up to a ton and back down is more fun than "fast" and worrying about the police. Remember no matter how quick OR fast your machine can go...doesn't matter if it is a car, bike or whatever....you can NEVER outrun, or be faster or quicker than their radio.

Back on topic...the cable guy was here the other day and saw the bike. He was an admitted Japanese sport bike guy (back when the CBR was known as the Honda Hurricane) Said he was thinking about getting another one now that his kids were out of the house, and wanted to know what model it was. When I said Triumph he said he didn't think they made anything but cruisers. I let him hear it start up, and he whipped out his camera phone, took some pics and some info, asked where the nearest dealer was and said he was going to have to "rethink" the Japanese mind set. Ahhhh...another convert.

Finally had one today I have to share.

A friends new roommate has an r1 and wanted to ride with us. After hearing him educate me on why he doesnt believe in helmets, how fast his bike was in a straight line, how good he was at running from cops, and him introducing me to his friend who he convinced to buy a gixxer 600 for his first ever motorcycle, I knew I was dealing with a real winner, and this was just in the first couple minutes, I could go on...

But the last straw was when he told me he didn't like Italian motorcycles like my Street Triple and that I should make it louder like his obnoxious r1.

Why do these people exist?!?!?!?

I live in Arizona and walk around Arizona State University for school. Right about this time of the year where it hits triple digits, hehe. A lot of people ask me why I'm wearing a jacket or have one even if its over my shoulder. The cliche in Arizona is to only wear gloves and a helmet and it really annoys the piss out of me. I even tell them the reasoning and they still don't understand...I need to start doing a motorcycle awareness program in Arizona that's for sure.
