I believe that is a speed rating notification.

ZR I think is rated for higher speeds.

the speed & weight rating is the 73w, 73 is the weight rating, the W for up to 168mph, this tire is a 73v, the v for up to 149mph, i found a wiki article that said pre 1991, the speed rating was included in the tire size ala ZR17(the z being speed), but said the zr was still in common use. but if the w, or v are the actual speed rating, then why put the z in there?

Wow this same thing just happened to me. The Pirelli Supercorsa's are rated for 198MPH and yes that is what the Z part is. So if you don't plan on going that fast, then you should be fine without the rating.
